Lady Comics: Who Needs Late Night? We’ve Got Tumblr
If you ask a female comedian how social media has impacted her professional life, she will likely respond like Elaine Carroll. “Social media has made my career,” says Carroll, the 30-year-old creator of the Very Mary Kate web series, a spoof of Mary Kate Olsen’s glam life in New York.
Remember just a few years back, when comedians (of any gender) relentlessly chased guest spots at the feet of David Letterman and Jay Leno? Getting a gig on late night was the ultimate career boost, but women comedians had to fight through the prejudices both professional (like infamously misogynist Letterman booker Eddie Brill) and cultural (let’s all try to forget that Christopher Hitchens essay).
But the level playing field of Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr means no one gets between ambitious talent and a potentially receptive audience. All it takes is perseverance, ability, skill, and infinite patience.
“Social media has essentially become my career,” says Kate Spencer, an improv instructor and writer at VH1 who blogs on Tumblr.

When Paris is Burning came out I was just a kid in the local choir in my church in New Orleans. I remember how much I loved everything about it — the characters, the costumes, the music. I couldn’t believe there were gay Black and Latino men being portrayed like that on screen. It meant a lot to me and in many ways inspired me to do something different and follow my dream, no matter what others said.
Read how the music and fashion of Paris is Burning, now available on Netflix streaming and iTunes, affected Big Freedia and others influenced by the late ’80s/early ’90s ball scene.

DUDE CITY/LUST-CATS OF THE GUTTERS/NIGHT OF JOY
Old Curtis Street Bar
03.22.12
Dude City is a 4 piece band coming out of Nevada. They are all dudes
except for the really cute organ player who quote, ‘gets down’, and
they sure did! Their vibe was very rock and roll with a twang of
country feel to it, almost like Ryan Adams and the Cardinals but
faster. I think the altitude hit them pretty hard as it does most
bands touring through Denver, but once they got the ball rolling it
was kick ass. They ended their set with heavy guitar riffs and the
singer was screaming it was pretty intensely awesome. It left you
with a feeling of wanting just a little more.
Lust-Cats of the Gutters (photos) is a two piece band originating in Denver.
It’s Robin on guitar and Alex on drums and I’ve been a huge fan of
these ladies since I first saw them play a couple of years ago at a
Halloween party up in Boulder. They are smoking hot babes that play
garage rock and they have such good stage and instrument performance.
Both of them sing in the band and they just released a tape on
Burger Records. The set was full on head banging madness and everyone
was dancing around. They cover Jet Boy Jet Girl as everyone was
screaming “He gives me head!” Pretty incredible. At the end Alex
falls all over her drum set in a big chaos and a fuckkkkkk youuuuu
attitude, my friend told me after their set she has a girl crush on
her. Hard not to.
Night of Joy is also a local Denver band with Vee, Coco and Fez. Vee
is a self taught guitar player and her style is so unique. It’s
pretty mesmerizing as they start of their set with Joy Divisions’
Insight. Coco is wearing a kick ass outfit with peace sign leggings and
bare feet with a L7 sticker on her bass. Fez is an incredible
drummer and he totally listens to Vee and Coco as they do a lot of
experimental mid play. It was my first time seeing them and seriously
they are one of the most tallented bands I’ve seen come out of Denver.
I mean, c’mon they have a song called Take me to Your Dealer, how
could you not love this band!photos: taylor
